Dallas Howe's career began with a Mathematics bent and a keen interest in the pioneering developments in computer technology occurring in the late 1960's. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, he attended the University of Saskatchewan and earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966 and his Master of Arts from that same university in 1968.

His formal education in computer technology included graduate studies in Computer Science at the University of Toronto in 1970/71.

At the age of 26 he entered the health care computing field in earnest. He led a Saskatchewan-based project working on the feasibility of the distributed departmental approach to computing utilizing the then newly-available mini-computers and developing systems based on that concept. Much of this work was true pioneering accomplishment with the development of operating systems, programming in machine language and self-sufficiency in computer hardware testing and service.

In 1972 his pioneering work in pharmacy automation caught the attention of a U.S.-based provider of hospital systems and what began as an offer to move to the U.S. as an employee of the company took an entrepreneurial turn. Dallas established his own firm, BDM INFORMATION SYSTEMS based in Saskatoon Saskatchewan performing development on behalf of that outside firm. Within a few short months he was in the systems development and export business.

From an original project involving two United States and one Canadian university hospital, BDM's client base grew steadily as the industry matured and the benefits of the implementation of computer technology became apparent. Over multiple eras of technology and health care software functionality BDM successfully anticipated trends and maintained a competitive advantage based on experience in complex environments, innovative functionality and the quality and responsiveness of its support organization.

From his early days as a system developer and programmer, Dallas Howe's career has developed into one of providing the vision and operational leadership for a vibrant, medium-sized, international technology enterprise. Today he is President and CEO of a group of companies focussing on computerized health care computing solutions including computer software and hardware technology as well as system implementation, systems integration/communications and network services. The firm employs 100 professional staff and serves a North America-wide client base from a number of strategic locations. The Financial Post magazine lists BDM among the Top 50 Software Companies in Canada.

In addition to his responsibilities with the BDM Group of Companies, Dallas currently holds the following positions:

Member of the Board of Directors, Potash Corp., one of the world's largest producers of fertilizer products including potash, nitrogen and phosphate. (Listed: TSX, NYSE Symbol POT).

Member of the Board of Governors, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which offers 58 degrees, diplomas and certificates in over 100 areas and disciplines.

Dallas has also served terms as:

Outside Board Advisor to the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Board of Directors. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (Symbol SWP.B on the Toronto Stock Exchange), based in Regina Saskatchewan, is Canada's largest publicly traded agribusiness cooperative.

Member of the first Board of Directors of the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority

Member of a Special Advisory Group to the Minister of International Trade for Canada on the matter of health care technology.

Dallas, his wife, and son also own and are active in a Saskatchewan farming operation that has been in the family for over 120 years.

Dallas Howe's list of personal accomplishments in the industry include the George M. Ryan Award for outstanding marketing achievement in the computer industry, The Province of Saskatchewan/Peat Marwick "High Tech Entrepreneur" award for outstanding business achievement, and recognition with BDM in the American Hospital Association's Hospitals Magazine as the number-one rated pharmacy software vendor in the United States. He is also asked to participate as a presenter and panel member in various forums across North America related to health care information. Dallas is a 20-year member of C.O.A.C.H., the Canadian Organization for the Advancement of Computers in Health, and BDM is an active HL7 (Health Level Seven protocol standard) Organizational Member.
