Information
The
Report Design Tool
Actuate e.Report Designer for Progress dramatically increases
the number of Progress customers that can build with and benefit
from Actuate e.Reporting Suite 4. The process of designing
Actuate reports usually required the expertise of a professional
software developer using the Actuate Developer Workbench (DWB),
but e.Report Designer is a low cost, and far simpler alternative
to DWB that allows users with basic Windows skills to design
complete and very powerful Actuate reports.
Easy-to-Use
Interface
Anyone with a basic understanding of Microsoft Windows and
relational databases can now create dynamic Actuate e.Reports.
Design
Flexibility
End users can design any number of report styles -
including tabular, listing with nested groups, label, columnar,
and cross-tab - each of which may include graphs, and e.Report
Designer ships with several pre-designed templates to give users
a head start in creating their own reports.
Simple
Reporting Model, No Programming Required
e.Report Designer users do not need to know the Actuate Basic
programming language to design typical reports. End users are
able to create basic reports within 60 seconds through powerful
report wizards and a simplified user interface consistent with a
standard Windows look and feel.
Full
Compatibility with Developer Workbench
A
derivative and functional subset of DWB, e.Report Designer
supports the same file and data formats, and report designs can
be interchanged between both products. e.Report Designer can
also access component libraries built using the DWB. This allows
end users to integrate any level of complexity or special
functionality offered by these components into their designs.
All reports created with the e.Report Designer are compatible
with all Actuate deployment products, such as report servers,
client applications, Web browsers, and ActiveX controls, in
exactly the same way as reports created with DWB.
Simplified Database Access
Database connections are established simply by selecting the
database by name. e.Report Designer provides the ability to
create configuration files containing default information
regarding database connection parameters, component libraries to
be used, and default report templates. Once created, the
configuration file automates and simplifies user access to these
features.
Leverage
Existing Actuate Investments
e.Report Designer can function as a stand-alone client product
for report design and testing. And its full compatibility with
Developer Workbench and other Actuate products allows end users
to share existing components and designs, and leverage existing
investments. Actuate's object-oriented approach to report design
allows component frameworks to be built by programmers using DWB
and provided to end users using e.Report Designer - thus
accelerating and simplifying the development of new reports, and
extending the capabilities of the reporting solution almost
infinitely.
Interactive e.Reports
Almost all the report design features and capabilities that make
Actuate unique - hyperlinks, interactive table of contents,
bubble help within reports, seamless Web integration, and
user-specified run-time parameters - are available with Actuate
e.Report Designer for Progress. And all Actuate products
seamlessly integrate into Progress-based applications.
